Colouring Stitches
Colours can be drawn on the chart whilst in Painting Mode. In Painting Mode two different tools are active; the Painting Tool and the Arrow Selection Tool.
Whilst the mouse is over stitches in a chart then the Painting Tool is active, otherwise the Arrow Selection Tool is active.
To enter Painting Mode, select a colour / yarn from the palette or from the key in the Chart Diagram file. Initially the cursor will be an arrow as the Arrow Selection Tool is active. If the mouse is moved over stitches in the chart the Painting Tool will become active and the cursor will change to a paintbrush. If you select 'custom' from the Colours palette drawer a dialog will appear allowing you to choose a colour that is not available in any of the palette drawers. Once you have selected a colour, close the dialog and the Painting Tool will be loaded with your custom colour.
There are three palette drawers in the palette that contain colours / yarns;-
-
Colours - this contains 15 colours plus the 'custom' option allowing you to choose your own colour.
-
Jamieson & Smith - this contains 102 shades of the 2 ply Jumper Weight yarn from Jamieson & Smith as of March 2024.
-
Jamieson's of Shetland - this contains 225 shades of the Spindrift yarn from Jamieson's of Shetland as of March 2024.
Note that the colours displayed for each yarn shade are only an approximation of the yarn as it is difficult to accurately show the yarn colours, particularly for marled or heathered shades.
Note that once a colour / yarn has been added to a chart and an entry is in the chart key it is possible to edit both the colour and the name.
Each of the colour palette drawers can have three different layouts;-
-
List - the colour icons and yarn names are listed in a single column.
-
Columns - the yarns are displayed in columns with the yarn name below each colour icon. The number of columns depends on the width of the palette.
-
Icons Only - this is similar to the Columns layout except only the colour icons are shown.
To change the layout of a colour drawer;-
-
Right mouse click (Windows) or Control mouse click (macOS) anywhere within the drawer. A popup menu appears.
-
Select Layout and then the desired option.
-
To colour a stitch on the chart move the mouse to the desired location and click. A single stitch will be coloured.
-
To colour several stitches adjacent to one another, click down on the first stitch and then, whilst the button is still down, move the mouse over as many stitches as desired. Release the mouse button to finish painting.
-
If the colour has not been used in the chart before, then an entry for the new colour will be automatically added to the key.
-
To change to a different stitch type or to a colour / yarn, select again from the palette or from the key.
