The consumes & produces values are used by the Validation feature to check if a chart makes sense. https://stitchmastery.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008863077-Validating-charts

If the row you're adding stitch marker symbols into doesn't include any decreases you'll need to add extra stitch columns to end up with the correct number of functioning stitches. https://stitchmastery.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360010898054-Inserting-Columns-and-Copied-Columns

Visually, if you are designing something where it would be helpful for the stitches in the rows below/above to line up, you can use one of the "no stitch" options above and below the Place/Slip Marker stitch. https://stitchmastery.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008103977-Hiding-no-stitch-stitches

I hope that answers your question but please reply back if you are still unclear.

    I think I understand what you're recommending.

In the case I'm working on, there are no increases or decreases next to the stitch markers. So, I would need to add columns to hold the stitch marker and hide unused cells accordingly.

However, adding a column where to place the marker increases the stitch count. This makes the row seem wider than it actually is. While designing/modifying, I would constantly have to remember that there are extra columns. Is there anyway to exclude the markers from the stitch count?

Adding a column adds a column of extra stitches, but neither "no stitch" symbols nor place/slip stitch marker symbols affect the stitch count, as they all produce and consume zero. So adding a column and filling it with "no stitches" and marker symbols won't affect your stitch count.
